Richard Fenton (1747–1821), KC, FAS by William Beechey

Richard Fenton (1747–1821), KC, FAS

William Beechey·c. 1796

Historical Context

Richard Fenton was a Welsh antiquary, topographer, and lawyer whose Tour in Pembrokeshire (1811) remains an important historical source. This portrait documents a figure who helped preserve knowledge of Welsh history and culture during the early nineteenth century. The portrait reflects Beechey's extensive practice among the English gentry and professional classes, executed with the solid, dependable technique that made him widely trusted across all levels of Georgian society.

Technical Analysis

The sitter's intellectual character is conveyed through an alert expression and composed pose, rendered with Beechey's characteristic warm naturalism.
