Ride of soldiers in the woods
Giovanni Fattori·1900
Historical Context
Painted around 1900, Ride of Soldiers in the Woods is among Fattori's late military works depicting cavalry moving through forested terrain — the specific tactical and visual challenge of warfare in enclosed, tree-covered landscape. The forest ride subject differs significantly from his more characteristic open Maremma or plains settings, requiring him to adapt his Macchiaioli tonal method to the fractured, filtered light of woodland. By 1900 he was in his late seventies and had been painting military subjects for nearly half a century; the forest setting represents an extension of his equestrian vocabulary into new formal territory. The work is held in the Galleria d'Arte Moderna Paolo e Adele Giannoni in Novara.
Technical Analysis
The woodland setting creates complex, fragmented light that Fattori handles through a denser, more varied tonal structure than in his open-landscape work. Tree forms and filtered light break the composition into smaller tonal units. The palette shifts cooler and greener than the warm ochres of his Maremma subjects. Horses moving through undergrowth are described with late-career economy.
Look Closer
- ◆Filtered woodland light creates a dappled, fragmented tonal complexity unusual in Fattori's military work
- ◆The enclosed space of the forest contrasts dramatically with his characteristic open Maremma horizons
- ◆Horses and soldiers are partially obscured by foliage — the setting actively mediates the viewer's perception
- ◆Cooler palette registers the different light and atmosphere of woodland versus open landscape
