Riva degli Schiavoni: Looking East by Canaletto

Riva degli Schiavoni: Looking East

Canaletto·1730

Historical Context

This 1730 eastward view along the Riva degli Schiavoni, looking toward the eastern reaches of Venice and the distant Arsenal, captures the full length of the city's main public waterfront from a perspective that shows the Riva as the true civic promenade of the Republic. The Arsenal — Venice's vast naval shipyard where the great galleys of its merchant and war fleets were built — was visible as a distant architectural mass at the composition's far end, reminding viewers that Venice's beauty rested on naval power. Canaletto painted the Riva from east and west, from close range and panoramic distance, in different seasons and times of day, as though compiling an exhaustive visual census of this indispensable public space. By 1730, the Riva's eastern reaches were lined with modest buildings housing sailors, merchants, and the service trades that supported Venice's maritime economy — a more workaday environment than the palaces of the Grand Canal, and one that Canaletto documented with the same topographic fidelity he brought to grander subjects. The painting is unlocated in a public collection but is known from exhibition history and auction records.

Technical Analysis

The composition extends along the curving waterfront, using the receding line of buildings and moored boats to create strong linear perspective. Atmospheric haze softens the distant architecture.
