Saint Paul enthroned

Domenico Beccafumi painted this Saint Paul Enthroned around 1516 for the Museo dell'Opera Metropolitana del Duomo in Siena. Beccafumi's work for Siena's cathedral complex established him as the city's leading painter, creating monumental devotional images that combined local tradition with his own proto-Mannerist innovations. The oil medium allowed for rich tonal transitions and glazed layers of color that created luminous depth impossible with the older tempera technique. Such devotional panels served both liturgical contexts in churches and chapels and private devotional use in the homes of wealthy families who maintained personal altars and oratories.
