Santa Maria della Salute und die Dogana (Nachahmer) by Canaletto

Santa Maria della Salute und die Dogana (Nachahmer)

Canaletto·c. 1733

Historical Context

This follower's view of Santa Maria della Salute and the Dogana, attributed to a Nachahmer (imitator) of Canaletto in the Bavarian State Painting Collections, documents the extraordinary commercial demand his work generated — demand so far exceeding one painter's capacity that a thriving market in studio copies, workshop variants, and independent imitations sustained itself throughout the eighteenth century. The enormous Salute, built by Baldassare Longhena from 1631 to fulfill the Republic's vow during the 1630 plague and completed posthumously in 1681, was among the most painted subjects in the Venetian veduta tradition because its dome and flanking buttresses provided an instantly recognizable silhouette from every approach to the Bacino. Canaletto's own versions of this subject established a compositional standard — the angle, the treatment of light on Longhena's complex Baroque geometry, the relationship between the church and the Dogana in front of it — that imitators and followers reproduced with varying degrees of success. The Bavarian State Painting Collections, assembled from the Wittelsbach dynasty's centuries of patronage and now distributed across several Munich museums, hold numerous works from the Canalettesque tradition acquired through the Continental European market rather than the British Grand Tour network.

Technical Analysis

The composition follows Canaletto's established formula for Salute views, though the handling of details suggests a copyist. The relationship between the Salute dome and the Dogana weathervane follows the master's typical spatial arrangement.

Look Closer

  • ◆Notice the compositional formula for Salute views followed faithfully, though the handling of details suggests a copyist rather than Canaletto himself.
  • ◆Look at the spatial arrangement between the Salute dome and the Dogana weathervane following the master's typical placement in this attributed follower's work.
  • ◆Observe the thriving market in copies that testified to the enormous popularity of Canaletto's Venetian views among international collectors.
