Scenes from the Life of Saint Peter by Master of the Legend of Saint Barbara

Scenes from the Life of Saint Peter

Master of the Legend of Saint Barbara·1500

Historical Context

The Master of the Legend of Saint Barbara was a major Brussels painter active in the late fifteenth century. This Scenes from the Life of Saint Peter in the Wallraf-Richartz Museum in Cologne reflects the narrative altarpiece tradition of the Brabantine school, where multi-scene panels illustrated the lives of saints for church and chapel decoration. The oil medium allowed for rich tonal transitions and glazed layers of color that created luminous depth impossible with the older tempera technique.

Technical Analysis

The panel presents multiple episodes from Peter's life in a continuous narrative format, with detailed architectural and landscape settings in the characteristic Brabantine style of precise craftsmanship and vivid coloring.
