Shore of the Marne, La Varenne

The Marne, the Seine's principal tributary east of Paris, flows through a valley that attracted Impressionist painters from Monet and Sisley to the succeeding generation, its slower, more rural character offering a quieter alternative to the main Seine corridor. Marquet's undated view of the Marne shore at La Varenne-Saint-Hilaire, the village on the Marne's south bank, brings his tonal economy to a subject associated with the lighter, more chromatic painting of the Impressionists. La Varenne was a popular weekend destination for Parisians, accessible by rail, and its riverside guinguettes and bathing spots gave the Marne a social character different from the working river subjects Marquet usually sought.
