The 'silver favourites' refers to the beloved pet fish—typically the silver mullet or other ornamental species—that wealthy Romans kept in elaborate piscinae (fish pools) as status symbols. Ancient sources record the extraordinary attachment Romans formed to their piscinae fish, with Cicero mocking his contemporaries' obsession with them as greater than their concern for public affairs. Alma-Tadema exploited this documented Roman practice to create luminous compositions in which women lean over sun-lit pool edges, creating complex reflections and counter-forms. The unknown collection and date suggest this is a lesser-known version of his fish pool subjects.
