Spring dream by William-Adolphe Bouguereau

Spring dream

William-Adolphe Bouguereau·1901

Historical Context

William-Adolphe Bouguereau's 'Spring Dream' (1901) is a characteristic late subject — the allegorical figure of spring, or a female figure in the dreaming relaxation of spring's arrival, depicted with the technical mastery and idealized beauty that was his consistent register. His spring subjects connected to the long tradition of seasonal allegory in European painting while remaining within the conventions of the French academic nude that was his primary genre. By 1901 his style was fully mature and his technical command undiminished despite his 76 years.

Technical Analysis

Bouguereau renders the spring dream figure with his characteristic extraordinary technical mastery — the figure's form modeled with the warm, soft precision that gave his female nudes their characteristic luminous quality, the skin tones achieved through his mastery of tonal gradation and color. His academic technique in these late works shows no diminishment of the virtuosity he had demonstrated since the 1860s. The figure's dreaming state is conveyed through her relaxed posture and closed or half-closed eyes within the idealized natural setting.
