St Ambrose with Saints

Ambrogio Bergognone painted this Saint Ambrose with Saints around 1510, depicting Milan's patron bishop saint flanked by companion figures in an altarpiece program that would have served a Milanese church or chapel dedicated to Saint Ambrose. Bergognone was one of the most important painters of late fifteenth- and early sixteenth-century Milan, working extensively for the Certosa di Pavia and other major Lombard institutions. His saint figures have a monumental dignity and spiritual depth that reflect both his formation in the Lombard tradition and his awareness of Leonardo's innovations in psychological expression. Saint Ambrose, the fourth-century bishop who converted Augustine and defended orthodoxy against Arianism, remained the dominant patron figure of Milan, and his image appeared in countless Milanese devotional contexts.
