St Anthony of Padua by Francesco Granacci

St Anthony of Padua

Francesco Granacci·1520

Historical Context

Francesco Granacci's Saint Anthony of Padua presents the Franciscan saint who was born in Lisbon but became associated with Padua through his miraculous ministry there. Granacci's Florentine training under Ghirlandaio gives his saint the graceful figure style and warm coloring inherited from that master, the Franciscan brown habit and lily attribute identifying Anthony with the characteristic precision of devotional iconography. As a minor Florentine master working in the shadow of his more famous contemporaries, Granacci maintained a steady production of devotional images that served the private religious needs of Florentine patrons who valued competent workmanship over intellectual ambition.

Technical Analysis

The painting demonstrates the technical conventions and artistic vocabulary of the period, with attention to composition, color, and the rendering of form appropriate to the subject.
