St. Cecilia
Antoine Wiertz·c. 1850
Historical Context
Antoine Wiertz was a Belgian painter known for his enormous, often macabre canvases that combined Romantic excess with academic ambition. This Saint Cecilia, patron saint of music, represents one of his more conventional religious subjects. Wiertz aspired to rival Rubens and Michelangelo in scale and intensity, and his Brussels studio was converted into a museum after his death, where it remains today.
Technical Analysis
The oil on panel shows Wiertz's characteristic blend of academic modeling with Romantic expressive intensity. The composition places the saint in an idealized pose with dramatic lighting that highlights her ecstatic devotion to sacred music.
Provenance
Mr. and Mrs. John Marsh, Jr., Delphos, Ohio by at least 1974 [according to John Marsh, Jr. letter dated May 31, 1977, in curatorial file]; given to the Art Institute, 1977.
