Still Life with a Hare
Historical Context
This undated work by Jan Weenix, now held at the Nationalmuseum in Stockholm, entered Swedish royal and then national collections through the acquisitions that built one of northern Europe's most distinguished holdings of Dutch and Flemish painting. Sweden was an active collector of Dutch art during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, and the Nationalmuseum's Weenix holdings reflect the prestige the artist commanded across European courts and noble houses. The hare as a single game subject carried associations with both aristocratic hunting culture and the classical still-life tradition of taxing the painter's ability to render animal fur — considered one of the most demanding textures in the genre hierarchy. Without a firm date, this work may belong to any phase of Weenix's career, though its confident handling of light and shadow on fur suggests the assured technique of his mature years rather than early experiment. The Stockholm setting also connects the painting to the broader Scandinavian reception of Dutch Baroque art.
Technical Analysis
Weenix employs a controlled raking light to model the hare's three-dimensional form, building up the fur with layered strokes ranging from warm sienna underpaint to cool pale grey highlights. The background is deeply shadowed with minimal detail, maintaining tonal contrast that gives the animal dramatic presence. The painting's surface is smooth and carefully finished, consistent with a cabinet work intended for close viewing.
Look Closer
- ◆The hare's limp posture, with back legs extended and forepaws relaxed, is observed with anatomical accuracy rather than stylised arrangement
- ◆Highlight strokes along the back follow the direction of fur growth, creating a sense of physical texture rather than abstract pattern
- ◆The shadowed underside of the hare uses cooler grey-blue tones that keep the form readable without the harsh contrast of full black shadow
- ◆A faint suggestion of a ledge or surface beneath the hare grounds it in a spatial context without requiring any further environmental detail
