Still Life with Apple Blossoms
Historical Context
Balthasar van der Ast was Bosschaert's brother-in-law and closest follower, but he gradually developed a more expansive and naturalistic approach to the still life — incorporating shells, lizards, butterflies, and fruit alongside flowers in ways that Bosschaert rarely attempted. This 1635 panel at the Gemäldegalerie Berlin shows apple blossoms, the delicate five-petaled flowers of the orchard rather than the exotic hothouse blooms Bosschaert favored. Apple blossom appears in spring, linking the composition to seasonal time in a way that single-season or composite bouquets do not. By 1635, Van der Ast had worked in Middelburg, Utrecht, and finally settled in Delft, where he spent the last decade of his life. The Gemäldegalerie Berlin holds one of Europe's finest collections of Dutch and Flemish cabinet paintings, and this modest panel exemplifies the intimate scale at which Van der Ast often worked — a jewel-sized object meant for close, contemplative viewing in a collector's cabinet.
Technical Analysis
Panel support with a smooth ground allows the delicate rendering of apple blossom petals, which are thinner and more translucent than rose or tulip petals. Van der Ast's technique here is softer than Bosschaert's — edges are slightly less crisp, reflecting his move toward more naturalistic representation. He likely used lead white mixed with pink lake for the pale blush of the flowers.
Look Closer
- ◆Apple blossoms are spring-season flowers, giving this composition a seasonal specificity absent from composite bouquets
- ◆The five-petaled blooms are rendered with attention to their delicate translucency compared to denser hothouse flowers
- ◆Van der Ast often includes a sprig of foliage separately placed to create spatial depth
- ◆The Gemäldegalerie Berlin setting places this alongside major Dutch cabinet paintings, reflecting its collector-object scale
