Still Life with Grapes in a Basket, a Dish of Strawberries, and Game Birds

This panel still life of around 1650, presenting grapes in a basket alongside strawberries and game birds, exemplifies the refined cabinet still life that characterised Snyders's late career. By the mid-seventeenth century the market for large-format game pieces was being supplemented by demand for smaller, more intimate still lifes for domestic interiors, and Snyders adapted accordingly. The combination of grapes, strawberries, and game birds creates the late-summer to early-autumn seasonal composite typical of Flemish still life, where the harvest abundance of fruit coincides with the beginning of the hunting season. Panel support at this late date suggests either a deliberate choice for the higher finish possible on a smooth ground, or a small-format commission where panel remained practical. Game birds — pheasant, partridge, or similar — provided Snyders with his most varied feathered textures and were a standard element of the luxury still life regardless of scale.

The panel format allows for extremely fine feather rendering, with individual quill structures visible in the birds' plumage. The grapes are painted with Snyders's characteristic attention to varying translucency — some fully ripe and deep-toned, others still pale and slightly unripe. The composition balances the organic mass of the fruit basket against the elongated forms of the suspended or laid game birds.
