Study of a cart and horses, with a carter and a dog by John Constable

Study of a cart and horses, with a carter and a dog

John Constable·October 1814

Historical Context

Made in October 1814, this study of a cart, horses, and their carter with a dog belongs to a remarkable sequence of agricultural studies Constable made during a prolonged autumn stay in Suffolk. The October timing was deliberate: the harvest was complete, the stubble fields golden, and the farm horses were back in regular use for the autumn ploughing. These detailed records of rural working equipment — the weight of the cart's wheels, the harness fittings, the carter's posture — reflect Constable's conviction that the authentic representation of agricultural labour required the same careful study he gave to cloud formations or tree canopy. His father's prosperity as a mill owner and corn merchant had given him an intimate understanding of the agricultural economy, and he painted working people and their tools with an insider's knowledge rather than the idealizing distance of picturesque convention. These Suffolk studies were also building reference material for the large six-foot canvases — The White Horse, Stratford Mill, The Hay Wain — that he was beginning to plan for the Royal Academy.

Technical Analysis

The horses and carter are rendered with observational accuracy, their forms modeled through careful tonal work. The composition is compact and focused, with the warm tones of the horses against the cooler landscape creating a natural color harmony.

Condition & Conservation

This study of a cart and horses from October 1814 is in the Victoria and Albert Museum. The painting documents agricultural life that Constable observed during his Suffolk visits. The small oil has been stabilized and cleaned. The figures and animals are well-preserved. The work provided source material for the carts and horses that appear in Constable's larger exhibition paintings.
