Summer landscape with grain harvest

This circa 1620 summer landscape with grain harvest, painted on copper, places Jan Brueghel the Younger within the long tradition of agricultural cycle painting that runs from the Limbourg Brothers' calendar illuminations through Bruegel the Elder's Harvesters to the numerous seasonal landscapes produced by the Flemish and Dutch workshops of the seventeenth century. The grain harvest — late summer, communal, physically demanding — was a subject loaded with symbolic associations: the agricultural year's culmination, the preparation of bread, Christological typology in the wheat ear. Brueghel's treatment on copper supports exceptionally fine detail in the depiction of ripe grain fields and harvesting figures.
