The Adoration of the Magi
Albrecht Altdorfer·1530
Historical Context
Altdorfer's Adoration of the Magi, a 1530 fresco fragment now in the Städel Museum, reveals his approach to the most iconic subject of Christian patronage — the arrival of the Magi before the Christ child — within the constraints of the fresco medium. The Adoration was endlessly revisited in Western painting precisely because it permitted the painter to display rich costume, exotic figures, landscape, and the radiant presence of the Christ child within a single composition. Altdorfer's fresco version, executed in lime plaster rather than oil, shows an abbreviated freshness that distinguishes it from his more elaborated panel treatments of religious subjects. The Städel acquisition places it within Frankfurt's collection of German Renaissance and early modern works, where it represents the secular and decorative applications of Altdorfer's religious imagination.
Technical Analysis
Fresco technique limits the tonal range and imposes economy of means — Altdorfer works with secure, unfussy outlines and washes of colour that function best at viewing distance. The Madonna and Child are likely given the best-preserved central position, with the Magi arranged laterally. Mineral pigments retain their warmth in the reds and ochres.
