The Adoration of the Magi
Historical Context
The Master of the Morrison Triptych painted this Adoration of the Magi around 1504. Named after a triptych in the Toledo Museum, this anonymous master worked in the Lower Rhine region. The Adoration of the Magi was one of the most visually splendid subjects available to religious painters. The tempera-on-panel medium required a carefully gessoed surface and was painted in fine, precise layers, yielding a luminous, jewel-like surface of great durability.
Technical Analysis
Oil on panel with rich coloring and detailed rendering of the kings' exotic costumes. The composition demonstrates the Master's command of the elaborate Epiphany subject within the Lower Rhenish tradition.
