The Annunciation
Historical Context
Girolamo Mazzola Bedoli was a painter active in Parma who married into Parmigianino's family and continued the elegant Mannerist style of that city's greatest painter. This 1523 Annunciation demonstrates the refined, decorative Mannerism that characterized Parmesan painting, with its elongated figures and rich, jewel-like coloring. Bedoli became the leading painter in Parma after Parmigianino's death.
