The arrival of the carts

The Arrival of the Carts, painted in 1881, belongs to Fattori's sustained documentation of transport and agricultural labour in the Tuscan countryside. The ox-cart was the fundamental vehicle of Maremma rural life, and Fattori depicted it in many configurations — arriving, departing, halted, laden. These transport scenes engage his twin interests in animal subjects and the rhythms of agricultural work, set within the specific landscape of coastal Tuscany. By 1881 his handling of oxen and carts had attained a fluency that could deliver convincing images from few strokes.
