The Ascension of Christ

Adriaen van Overbeke painted this Ascension of Christ around 1515, depicting the moment of Christ's departure from earth after the Resurrection, his apostles and the Virgin watching as he rises into heaven. The Ascension was a central feast in the Christian liturgical calendar, and altarpieces depicting it were standard commissions for churches celebrating the feast of Ascension Thursday. Van Overbeke's Brussels workshop brought careful spatial organization to the challenging subject—the ascending Christ shown from below or in partial figure, the apostles arranged in a semicircle of wonder and devotion. The upward movement of the ascending Christ creates a natural visual axis that guides the viewer's gaze from earth to heaven, the devotional trajectory of prayer itself made visible in paint.
