The Christening

Painted around 1900, 'The Christening' depicts one of the central rites of Catholic domestic life in the Spanish Mediterranean — the baptism of a newborn — observed with the same documentary interest that Sorolla brought to weddings, fishing customs, and regional festivals. Baptism in this context was a community event as much as a religious one: the gathering of family, the procession to church, the presentation of the child, all unfolded according to customs that varied subtly by region and social class. Sorolla's treatment of religious subjects tends to situate them within social practice rather than spiritual transcendence — the sacrament is shown as lived experience rather than theological event. By 1900 he had moved decisively away from his earlier dark Valencian realism and socially critical subjects toward an art of light, but his engagement with working-class and peasant life persisted in these genre canvases.
