The Death of St. Jerome and His Apparition to St. Cyril of Jerusalem by Sano di Pietro

The Death of St. Jerome and His Apparition to St. Cyril of Jerusalem

Sano di Pietro·1437

Historical Context

This Death of Saint Jerome and His Apparition to Saint Cyril at the Louvre completes the narrative arc of the Jerome cycle painted in 1437. Jerome died in Bethlehem in 420 CE after decades of biblical scholarship and ascetic discipline, and his death was attended by the monastic community he had gathered around him. The posthumous apparition to Cyril of Jerusalem belongs to the tradition of saints who continued to intercede and appear after death, extending their active ministry beyond the grave. Sano di Pietro renders both moments—the peaceful death and the miraculous vision—with the narrative clarity and devotional gravity that characterized his hagiographic illustration.

Technical Analysis

The dual narrative is organized with Sano di Pietro's characteristic clarity, the deathbed scene and the miraculous apparition rendered in separate spatial zones united by the refined Sienese style.
