The Holy Family and Saint John the Baptist under an Oak Tree (after Raphael) by Jan van Scorel

The Holy Family and Saint John the Baptist under an Oak Tree (after Raphael)

Jan van Scorel·1524

Historical Context

Jan van Scorel painted this Holy Family around 1524, depicting the intimate domestic grouping of the Virgin, Christ Child, and Saint Joseph that gained popularity as devotional emphasis shifted toward the humanity of Christ. The painting is in the Glasgow Museums Resource Centre. Jan van Scorel was the first Dutch painter to study in Italy and bring back Italian Renaissance principles, transforming Netherlandish portraiture and religious painting in the 1520s.

Technical Analysis

The devotional composition is rendered with attention to the expressive and contemplative qualities that served the painting's function as an aid to prayer and meditation.
