The Holy Family by Dosso Dossi

The Holy Family

Dosso Dossi·1516

Historical Context

Dosso Dossi, the leading painter of the Este court in Ferrara, created this Holy Family around 1516. Known for his poetic, Giorgionesque approach to subject matter and his rich, atmospheric palette, Dosso was one of the most original painters of the Italian High Renaissance, admired by contemporaries for the musical quality of his color. The tempera medium required careful preparation on a gessoed panel and a disciplined layering technique that produced precise, durable surfaces suited to the intricate detail expected of devotional painting.

Technical Analysis

The panel shows Dosso's characteristic warm, enveloping palette with soft atmospheric effects and the poetic mood that distinguished his devotional works from the more structured classicism of his Roman contemporaries.
