The Holy Family with the Infant Saint John the Baptist by Perino del Vaga

The Holy Family with the Infant Saint John the Baptist

Perino del Vaga·1524

Historical Context

Perino del Vaga painted this Holy Family with the Infant Saint John around 1524, reflecting his continued development of Raphael's legacy. After the Sack of Rome in 1527, Perino worked in Genoa and eventually returned to Rome, becoming the leading decorative painter of the Farnese circle. The tempera-on-panel medium required a carefully gessoed surface and was painted in fine, precise layers, yielding a luminous, jewel-like surface of great durability.

Technical Analysis

The panel shows Perino's elegant Raphaelesque style with refined drawing, graceful figure arrangement, and the decorative sophistication inherited from his years in Raphael's workshop.
