The Holy Towel by Emmanuel Tzanes

The Holy Towel

Emmanuel Tzanes·1659

Historical Context

Emmanuel Tzanes, the leading icon painter of seventeenth-century Crete, created this image of the Holy Towel (Mandylion) in 1659 while working in Venice. Tzanes uniquely blended Byzantine iconographic traditions with Western Baroque influences, reflecting the cultural exchange between Venetian-ruled Crete and Italy. The Holy Towel, bearing the miraculous imprint of Christ's face, was one of the most venerated images in Orthodox Christianity.

Technical Analysis

Tzanes combines the flat gold backgrounds and hieratic frontal presentation of Byzantine tradition with Western modeling techniques and chiaroscuro effects. The careful layering of egg tempera and oil creates a surface that bridges Eastern and Western painting traditions.
