Historical Context
The Master of the Von Groote Adoration painted this Lamentation over the Dead Christ around 1507 for the Museum der Bildenden Künste in Leipzig. The anonymous master takes his name from a patron family, and his work reflects the high quality of devotional painting produced in the Cologne-Netherlands orbit during the early sixteenth century. The oil medium allowed for rich tonal transitions and glazed layers of color that created luminous depth impossible with the older tempera technique. Such devotional panels served both liturgical contexts in churches and chapels and private devotional use in the homes of wealthy families who maintained personal altars and oratories.
Technical Analysis
