The Major Makes a Proposal
Pavel Fedotov·1851
Historical Context
This is a later, more finished version or replica of Fedotov's famous 1848 canvas 'Major's Marriage Proposal,' held in the Russian Museum. Fedotov returned to the subject of the mercenary marriage — a wealthy but socially inferior merchant family's daughter being married off to a military officer seeking money rather than love — in multiple versions, suggesting both the commercial demand for the composition and his own ambivalence about its moral content. The subject satirized a practice widespread in mid-nineteenth-century Russian society: the exchange of social respectability (the officer's rank) for financial security (the merchant's capital). The merchant family's domestic interior is crowded with the evidence of new wealth — fine furniture, china, a parrot — while the officer preens in the doorway. Fedotov's critical eye spares neither party, but his sympathy, insofar as it exists, lies with the young woman trapped in the transaction.
Technical Analysis
The genre scene format required Fedotov to maintain high descriptive detail throughout the composition — every object in the merchant interior serves a characterizing function and must be identifiable. His paint handling in such scenes is meticulous in the foreground still-life elements (china, fabric, food) while remaining broadly adequate in background architectural details. The lighting scheme, entering from one window, creates the directional illumination that links the scattered narrative elements.
Look Closer
- ◆The domestic interior's furnishings signal the merchant family's aspiration to aristocratic taste through expensive but slightly mismatched objects
- ◆The young woman's posture — likely fleeing or hesitating — represents the emotional center of the satirical narrative
- ◆The major himself is characterized through his pose and military dress rather than through face — type over individual
- ◆Small still-life details throughout the interior — food, china, fabrics — are rendered with meticulous descriptive care
