The Mass of Saint Gregory at the Prado, attributed to Bosch around 1494, depicts the miraculous appearance of Christ during Mass. This Eucharistic miracle validated the Catholic doctrine of transubstantiation that would become central to Counter-Reformation theology. This work falls in the decades immediately around 1500, when Renaissance ideals of harmony and classical order were being synthesised across Europe. Hieronymus Bosch, working in the southern Netherlands in the late fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries, created a body of work that has no parallel in Western art for the consistency and originality of its imaginative vision.
