The Molo: Looking West by Canaletto

The Molo: Looking West

Canaletto·1730

Historical Context

This 1730 westward view from the Molo, looking across the Bacino toward the entrance of the Grand Canal and the Dogana, captures the most open waterscape available from Venice's ceremonial quay — a horizon composed not of palace facades but of water, distant buildings, and the triangular point of the Dogana surmounted by Fortune's golden globe. The viewpoint places the painter virtually at the water's edge on the Molo, looking across the full width of the basin to where the Giudecca Canal on the right and the main channel on the left converged toward the Adriatic beyond. Canaletto painted this westward prospect repeatedly as a companion to his southward views from the Piazzetta and his northward views across the Bacino, building a comprehensive visual circuit of the ceremonial waterfront. His handling of open water, sky, and distant architectural silhouettes in these panoramic views was among his most technically accomplished achievements, requiring precise atmospheric recession and tonal control to organize compositions where the architectural clarity of his palace views was necessarily relaxed. The painting remains unlocated in a public collection.

Technical Analysis

The wide composition extends along the Molo's waterfront, with the Doge's Palace columns and Sansovinian library creating architectural rhythm. The water surface catches the reflected light of the surrounding buildings.
