The Molo with the Library and the Entrance to the Grand Canal by Canaletto

The Molo with the Library and the Entrance to the Grand Canal

Canaletto·1740

Historical Context

This large 1740 view of the Molo with the Library and the entrance to the Grand Canal — one of the most ambitious panoramic compositions in Canaletto's Venetian output — captures the full breadth of Venice's ceremonial waterfront in a canvas of monumental scale (110.5 × 185.5 cm). The view encompasses Sansovino's Library of Saint Mark on the left, the twin columns of San Marco and San Teodoro, the Doge's Palace extending to the right, and the entire expanse of the Bacino beyond, with San Giorgio Maggiore closing the distance. This was the standard approach view to Venice for arriving visitors — the sight that travelers had been anticipating throughout their Grand Tour — and Canaletto rendered it with the authority of two decades' continuous practice. By 1740, his Venetian vedute had reached such a level of formal perfection that they might be mistaken for studio productions, but close examination reveals the freshness of observation that kept his mature work alive: the specific disposition of light on the Library's columns, the individual characterization of the gondolas and merchant vessels in the Bacino, the subtle recession of the Molo into the distance.

Technical Analysis

The composition balances the horizontal expanse of the Molo with the vertical accents of columns and buildings. The water of the Bacino provides luminous reflections that animate the lower portion of the canvas.

Look Closer

  • ◆Notice the horizontal expanse of the Molo balanced against vertical accents of the twin columns of San Marco and San Teodoro with the Biblioteca Marciana beyond.
  • ◆Look at the water of the Bacino providing luminous reflections that animate the lower canvas, mirroring the waterfront architecture above.
  • ◆Observe Venice's primary waterfront promenade captured in this 1740 view — one of the most photographed vistas in the world.
