Historical Context
Berck, the coastal town south of Boulogne on the Opal Coast, was known in the late nineteenth century primarily as a therapeutic resort — its sandy beaches and sea air were prescribed for patients recovering from tuberculosis and orthopaedic conditions. The orphanage or convalescent walk that Le Sidaner depicts in his 1888 canvas brings together the town's medical character with the kind of observed social documentary that was still current in French painting under the influence of Bastien-Lepage's naturalism. Young figures in institutional dress walking along a prescribed route against a coastal backdrop create a composition of quiet melancholy — the regimented walk contrasting with the freedom implied by the open sea and sky behind them. The Musée des Beaux-Arts de Dunkerque holds this early work alongside others from Le Sidaner's northern coastal period, allowing it to be understood within the arc of his development from social observation toward pure atmospheric intimism.
