The Piazzetta, Venice, Looking North by Canaletto

The Piazzetta, Venice, Looking North

Canaletto·1730

Historical Context

This 1730 northward view of the Piazzetta, looking from the Molo between the columns of San Marco and San Teodoro toward the Basilica, captures Venice's formal entrance from the lagoon in a composition that compresses the entire political geography of the Republic into a single vista. The Piazzetta — the narrow ceremonial space between the Doge's Palace and Sansovino's Library — connected the sea-facing Molo to the great Piazza San Marco, funneling arriving visitors through a passage flanked by the symbols of Venetian power and civilization. Canaletto painted this subject numerous times, understanding that it encapsulated Venice more completely than any other single view: the palace of government, the library of learning, the columns of civic order, and the basilica of religious authority all visible simultaneously. The Norton Simon Museum in Pasadena, which holds this work, was assembled by the industrialist Norton Simon during the 1960s–70s as one of California's finest private-to-public art collections, encompassing European painting from the fourteenth through twentieth centuries with particular strength in Dutch and Flemish Baroque alongside its celebrated works of South and Southeast Asian sculpture.

Technical Analysis

The tall, narrow composition emphasizes the Piazzetta's dramatic proportions, with the Campanile and clock tower visible beyond. Canaletto renders the elaborate Gothic and Renaissance architecture with meticulous detail.
