The Predication of Saint Paul by Joseph-Benoît Suvée

The Predication of Saint Paul

Joseph-Benoît Suvée·1779

Historical Context

Painted in 1779 and now held by the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, The Predication of Saint Paul depicts one of the most dramatic scenes in early Christian history: Paul's missionary preaching, whether at Athens, Antioch, or another city of the ancient world. The Acts of the Apostles and Paul's epistles record a life of extraordinary missionary energy, and the image of Paul addressing crowds drawn from diverse cultures and backgrounds had been a major subject of Counter-Reformation painting. For a Neoclassical painter, the subject offered the challenge of managing a crowd composition organized around a single orating figure — a compositional type that also served for secular subjects like the ancient philosophers and orators. LACMA holds significant examples of French Neoclassical painting, and this religious canvas represents Suvée's engagement with the grand figural tradition of religious history painting.

Technical Analysis

The composition centers on the figure of Paul mid-oration, with his gesture of address directing the composition's energy outward. The crowd of listeners is organized in responsive poses — some attentive, some skeptical, some moved — creating a psychological range. Suvée uses directional light to isolate the preacher figure from the crowd.

Look Closer

  • ◆Paul's oratorical gesture is the compositional energy source of the entire crowd scene
  • ◆Varied crowd responses — belief, skepticism, wonder — create psychological diversity
  • ◆Directed light singles out the preacher from the more dimly lit listeners
  • ◆Classical architectural setting establishes the ancient Mediterranean urban context
