The Rialto, from the North by Canaletto

The Rialto, from the North

Canaletto·1725

Historical Context

This early 1725 view of the Rialto from the north, at the Pinacoteca Agnelli in Turin, pairs with the Agnelli collection's 1730 Grand Canal view as documentation of Canaletto's development across a crucial half-decade of his career. The northern approach to the Rialto, looking downstream toward the bridge's arch, exposed the commercial infrastructure of the market area: the fish and vegetable markets (Pescheria and Erberia) clustered beneath the bridge's approaches, the constant traffic of loaded barges and gondolas, and the specific character of the Fondaco dei Tedeschi — the German merchants' trading house — that dominated the canal's eastern bank near the bridge. At 91.4 × 135.8 cm, this is a substantial work that was likely commissioned by a major collector rather than produced speculatively. The Pinacoteca Agnelli, housed in Turin's Lingotto building — the former Fiat factory that Le Corbusier called 'a unique example of industrial architecture' — represents an unusual combination of industrial heritage and art museum, the collection assembled by Gianni Agnelli over decades of collecting European painting.

Technical Analysis

The bridge's single arch frames the canal view beyond, creating a natural compositional portal. The warm early palette and atmospheric treatment characterize Canaletto's work before his mature crystalline style emerged.
