The Thames from the Terrace of Somerset House, Looking toward Westminster by Canaletto

The Thames from the Terrace of Somerset House, Looking toward Westminster

Canaletto·1750

Historical Context

This Yale Center for British Art view of the Thames from Somerset House looking toward Westminster — the westward counterpart to the City-facing view — completes Canaletto's panoramic documentation of London's most important riverine prospect, together covering nearly the full sweep of the Thames from the City to Westminster. The Yale Center holds both views, giving it arguably the most complete single-institution representation of this famous pair outside the Royal Collection. By 1750, when these paintings were produced, the Thames was simultaneously London's commercial artery, its sewer, its pleasure ground, and the main stage for its ceremonial life — a multifunctional waterway without equivalent in European cities except the Grand Canal, a parallel that structured Canaletto's entire English project. The Yale Center for British Art, designed by Louis Kahn and opened in 1977 as his last major building, houses the most comprehensive collection of British art outside the United Kingdom — Paul Mellon's systematic acquisition of British painting, drawing, and printmaking now serves as the primary research resource for the field, with these Canalettos forming part of its eighteenth-century British art holdings.

Technical Analysis

The westward view captures Westminster Abbey and the old Parliament buildings as distant silhouettes. The broad Thames provides a luminous foreground that unifies the sprawling architectural panorama.
