The Throne of Grace by Colijn de Coter

The Throne of Grace

Colijn de Coter·1512

Historical Context

Colijn de Coter painted this Throne of Grace around 1512 for the Louvre. The Gnadenstuhl depicts God the Father holding the crucified Christ with the Holy Spirit dove, one of the most important visual representations of the Trinity in late-medieval art. The 1510s were a decade of extraordinary artistic achievement across Europe, shaped by the mature works of Leonardo, Raphael, Michelangelo, and the Venetian masters. The oil medium allowed for rich tonal transitions and glazed layers of color that created luminous depth impossible with the older tempera technique.

Technical Analysis

The panel presents the Trinitarian image with de Coter's characteristic bold modeling and dramatic expression, combining theological gravity with vigorous figure painting.
