The Vision of St Hubert, painted in 1617 and in the Museo del Prado, depicts the conversion of Hubert of Liège, the patron saint of hunters. According to hagiographic tradition, Hubert was hunting on Good Friday when a stag appeared before him bearing a crucifix between its antlers; the vision prompted his conversion and eventual career as a bishop and missionary. The subject was especially popular in the Southern Netherlands, where Hubert was venerated as a local saint and hunting was a major aristocratic pastime. As a panel from the Five Senses series context — this work is sometimes associated with the Prado's Brueghel holdings but stands as an independent religious work — it demonstrates Brueghel's lifelong mastery of forested landscape settings.
