Historical Context
Painted in 1612 and held in the Herzog Anton Ulrich Museum in Brunswick, this early canvas depicting three greyhounds represents one of Snyders's first significant purely animal compositions. Greyhounds were among the most prestigious dogs in seventeenth-century Europe, bred exclusively for coursing hare and hunting by sight; they were symbols of aristocratic privilege and the objects of intense connoisseurship. A painting of three greyhounds would have been commissioned by an owner wishing to commemorate specific animals, or by an aristocratic household seeking animal paintings for a hunting lodge or kennel building. In 1612 Snyders was in his late twenties and already establishing his reputation as the finest animal painter in Antwerp. This early work shows his ability to differentiate between individual animals through coat colour, stance, and physiognomy — three distinctly characterised animals rather than repeated types. The Herzog Anton Ulrich Museum holds important Flemish Baroque works, and this early Snyders is a significant example of his animal portraiture.
Technical Analysis
