Historical Context
Two Thistles (1888) was painted at Arles during the most productive year of Van Gogh's career, when his attention ranged across the entire spectrum of the Provençal landscape — from panoramic harvest fields to individual plants observed with botanical intensity. Thistles had interested him since his Nuenen period, and the southern species he found at Arles were both botanically different from the northern thistles he knew and chromatically more vivid — their purple flower heads more saturated, their spiny gray-green leaves more dramatically architectural. He brought to the thistle the same combination of close observation and personal identification that marked all his plant studies: the thistle's prickly persistence, its survival in poor soil and harsh conditions, resonated with his own experience of working against resistance. Writing to Bernard in 1888 about his approach to natural subjects, he described wanting to paint plants and flowers that most painters would walk past — the overlooked, the unfashionable, the subjects that required a different kind of looking from conventional still-life subjects. Technical Analysis
Van Gogh renders the two thistles with the intense observation of his Arles period: each spiny leaf and flower head is described through directional brushstrokes that follow the plant's specific growth pattern.
