View on the Scheldt by Clarkson Frederick Stanfield

View on the Scheldt

Clarkson Frederick Stanfield·1826

Historical Context

Stanfield's View on the Scheldt from 1826 depicts the great river that flows through Antwerp to the North Sea — one of the primary commercial waterways of northern Europe and the route by which Flemish painting had once traveled to England through the trade in art as well as textiles. The Scheldt was the arterial route of the Flemish economy and the waterway most associated with Flemish commercial and artistic civilization. Stanfield's river view combined topographical documentation with the atmospheric treatment of water and sky that was his primary contribution to British marine painting.

Technical Analysis

Stanfield renders the river scene with atmospheric depth and careful attention to the specific quality of northern European light on water. The shipping and architectural elements are painted with maritime precision, while the sky and water create a luminous atmospheric framework. The palette is cool and silvery, characteristic of northern maritime light.
