The perspective from the Giudecca Canal offers one of the widest views of the San Marco waterfront, encompassing the Doge's Palace, the Campanile, and the dome of the Salute in a single sweeping panorama. The Wallace Collection's extensive Venetian holdings — among the finest in Britain — were assembled primarily by the fourth Marquess of Hertford, whose passionate collecting of eighteenth-century art made his collection one of the most important private assemblages of European painting in the nineteenth century.
