Venice: The Basin of San Marco on Ascension Day
Canaletto·1740
Historical Context
This large National Gallery canvas depicting the Bacino di San Marco on Ascension Day, painted around 1740, is Canaletto's definitive treatment of Venice's grandest annual festival — the Sensa, when the Doge sailed out on the gilded state barge Bucintoro to drop a gold ring into the waters of the Adriatic, symbolically renewing Venice's dominion over the sea. The ceremony, tracing its origins to a military victory of 1000 AD and elaborated into a magnificent state pageant over the subsequent centuries, was the most spectacular display of Venetian civic ritual and a mandatory spectacle for Grand Tour visitors. Canaletto treats the subject on a scale appropriate to its importance: the great canvas takes in the full sweep of the Bacino, the Doge's flotilla, accompanying galliasses, gondolas, spectator boats, and the architectural panorama of San Giorgio Maggiore and the Molo. The technical challenge of painting so many differentiated vessels on water — each with its distinctive silhouette and reflection — while maintaining atmospheric coherence was immense, and Canaletto meets it with the systematic thoroughness he brought to all his major ceremonial subjects. The National Gallery acquired this work in the nineteenth century as part of its program to represent the European painting tradition comprehensively.
