Venice: The Grand Canal from the Carità towards the Bacino by Canaletto

Venice: The Grand Canal from the Carità towards the Bacino

Canaletto·1727

Historical Context

This 1727 Royal Collection Grand Canal view from the Carita toward the Bacino — a companion to the San Vio view in both direction and date — shows the canal from a point approximately where the Accademia bridge now stands (built only in 1854), a stretch that in Canaletto's time had no crossing and offered an unobstructed view down to where the canal opened into the Bacino. The Carita monastery on the left bank (later converted into the Accademia di Belle Arti and eventually the Gallerie dell'Accademia) provided a significant institutional anchor in this stretch of the canal, its Gothic church facade contrasting with the Renaissance and Baroque palaces downstream. Canaletto's 1727 date for this pair with the San Vio view suggests a deliberate campaign to document the same stretch of the canal from complementary vantage points, creating a visual argument about the canal's three-dimensional character that no single view could convey. The Royal Collection's coherent group of early Canaletto views, assembled over several years through Smith's agency, now provides art historians with the most systematic record available of his evolving technique in the 1720s.

Technical Analysis

The canal recession toward the Bacino creates strong perspective lines, with palazzo facades framing the waterway. The warm early palette and animated boat traffic characterize Canaletto's early veduta style.
