Venice: The Grand Canal from the Palazzo Foscari to the Carità by Canaletto

Venice: The Grand Canal from the Palazzo Foscari to the Carità

Canaletto·1740

Historical Context

This Grand Canal view from the Palazzo Foscari to the Carita, at the Wallace Collection in London, captures one of the canal's most architecturally distinguished stretches — anchored at one end by the late Gothic Ca' Foscari (1453), one of the grandest palaces of Venice's medieval ruling class, and extending downstream toward the Accademia area. The Ca' Foscari, with its graceful triple-tiered loggia and the Gothic tracery of its piano nobile windows, was considered one of the finest examples of the Venetian Gothic civic architecture that gave the canal its distinctive visual character. The Wallace Collection, assembled by the first four Marquesses of Hertford and Sir Richard Wallace in the nineteenth century and bequeathed to the nation in 1897, is housed in Hertford House in Manchester Square and holds one of the greatest concentrations of French eighteenth-century painting and decorative arts in the world alongside significant Italian, Dutch, and Flemish works. Canaletto's Grand Canal views were acquired by the Collection as expressions of its broad representation of European aristocratic taste rather than as a specifically Venetian collecting focus.

Technical Analysis

Canaletto's precise rendering of the Gothic tracery of the Palazzo Foscari demonstrates his ability to describe architectural style through paint. The warm stone of the palace facade catches the afternoon light, while the water below reflects a cooler, more dissolved version of the same architecture.
