Venice: The Grand Canal from the Salute towards the Carità by Canaletto

Venice: The Grand Canal from the Salute towards the Carità

Canaletto·1729

Historical Context

This 1729 Royal Collection view from the Salute toward the Carita captures one of the Grand Canal's most graceful perspectives, looking upstream from Longhena's great church toward the Accademia stretch where the canal curved past the Palazzo Corner della Ca' Granda and the Palazzo Rezzonico. The early date — the Royal Collection series began to be assembled through Consul Smith in the late 1720s — places this among the initial wave of Canaletto's works to enter what would become the world's largest single collection of his paintings. Joseph Smith's systematic acquisition strategy created an unprecedented concentration of Canaletto's output: by the time he sold the collection to George III in 1762, it contained over fifty canvases and an extensive group of drawings. The view from the Salute looking upstream toward the Carita was a compositional type Canaletto had worked out in multiple versions, and this Royal Collection example represents his mature exploration of the stretch's architectural qualities — the variety of palace facades, the curve of the canal, the afternoon light flooding the water from the south.

Technical Analysis

The canal's gentle curve creates a flowing compositional line through the painting, with palazzo facades providing architectural depth on both sides. The water surface captures delicate reflections of the surrounding buildings.
