Venice: The Piazza and Piazzetta from the Torre dell'Orologio towards San Giorgio
Canaletto·1743
Historical Context
This 1743 Royal Collection view from the Piazza and Piazzetta toward San Giorgio Maggiore, with the Torre dell'Orologio visible at the left, encompasses Venice's most famous urban space from the perspective of someone standing near the Basilica's south facade — a viewpoint that foregrounds the Piazzetta's full length between the Doge's Palace and the Library before opening to the Bacino with San Giorgio's silhouette on the horizon. The Torre dell'Orologio, the Renaissance clock tower built by Mauro Codussi in 1497, displayed a large enameled astronomical clock and featured bronze Moors who struck the bell at the top of each hour — one of the most celebrated mechanical monuments of the Renaissance. Canaletto's composition at 78.6 × 122 cm is large enough to develop considerable spatial depth while remaining a cabinet picture rather than a monumental commission, a scale he found particularly productive for combining architectural panorama with lively staffage. The 1743 date places this among his finest late Venetian works before England, displaying the complete mastery of light, perspective, and compositional organization that defined his mature achievement.
Technical Analysis
The sweeping perspective moves from the piazza through the Piazzetta to the distant island of San Giorgio. Canaletto manages the complex transition between enclosed urban space and open lagoon view.
