Venice: The Rialto Bridge from the North by Canaletto

Venice: The Rialto Bridge from the North

Canaletto·1726

Historical Context

This 1726 Royal Collection view of the Rialto Bridge from the north — pendant to the southward views Canaletto produced of the same subject — shows the bridge's upstream face and the market activity that clustered around its northern approaches. The northern face of the Rialto was less frequently depicted than the dramatic southern arch but offered its own compositional advantages: the fish and vegetable markets (Pescheria and Erberia) that lined the canal below provided bustling foreground activity, and the bridge's shops were visible from this angle as a horizontal band across the span's full width. Canaletto's systematic treatment of the Rialto from both sides — with and without market crowds, in different seasons and light conditions — reflects his methodical approach to exhausting a subject's compositional possibilities across multiple commissions. The 1726 date, matching the northward view in the Royal Collection, suggests these were conceived as a pair, offering complementary perspectives of Venice's commercial heart from both directions. The Royal Collection's comprehensive Canaletto holdings now allow scholars to reconstruct the entire evolution of his Rialto series across four decades.

Technical Analysis

The bridge's monumental arch provides the dominant architectural element, with the surrounding buildings and boat traffic creating a busy mercantile scene. The northern light illuminates the bridge's marble surfaces.

Look Closer

  • ◆Notice the bridge's monumental arch from the northern side, with the surrounding buildings and boat traffic creating a busy mercantile scene illuminated by northern light.
  • ◆Look at the Rialto's marble surfaces catching the light at the narrowest point of the Grand Canal in this 1726 Royal Collection view.
  • ◆Observe Venice's only canal crossing for nearly three centuries, designed by Antonio da Ponte and completed in 1591.
